meeting?

Hi, gals. What do you think about meeting up pretty soon?

We should meet on a Tuesday before regular class starts (Dr. Poynor did mention that's why he scheduled us to only meet for period 7 on Tuesday, so that we can meet before class starts and discuss). We probably can't meet this week because is very short notice, but how about February 8th? We can meet 45 mins - 1 hour before hand to discuss ideas, roles of each member, etc.

hey guys! So I was looking through our syllabus and we have a team report due on feb. 17th so we should start fleshing out our ideas. We're definitely going with the sun-society but let's figure out names for our home planet, culture, religious ritual, etc.

Here are some interesting root words/ latin words that may give us some ideas.

Roots for sun: sol-, soli-, solo-, helio-

girasole
1. The sunflower; literally, "turning toward the sun", from girare, "to rotate, to turn".
2. An opal with brilliant flame-like yellow, orange, and red colors.
3. An opal that reflects light in a bright luminous glow.

helioid
like or similar to the sun

Scientia sol mentis
knowledge, the sun of the mind

lunisolar
1. pertaining to the mutual relations of the sun and moon, or resulting in their combined action
2. lunisolar period: cycle of 532 years

I also found this picture on stumble that i thought could be a good headdress idea. We can use ideas from Melanesian singsing to create our own masks that are based on the same design but individualized.

I am loving these ideas! Building on the idea of a cult of sun worshipers, what do you all think about a race of plant people? We could look at the sun like a divine seed, who's light is like roots and the earth is the flower. I really liked the idea of a ritualistic birth of the sun, and as plant people we could treat it as a seed that needs to be planted in the sky.

Also, I have a sewing machine, so I could help sew costumes.

Masquerade

I just want to say that I love ALL the ideas posted so far!!

But I also think that it could be cool to experiment with the idea of masks in culture! (you know, like the really intricate kinds!)

I feel like this could be a great way for us to incorporate different symbols and materials into our culture and it would be really fun for each of us to create our own, unique mask!

light beings 2

I like the idea of looking into a society of light/sun/golden women/beings that take ritualistic part in the death of one sun and perhaps the birthing of a new sun... as one sun implodes a new one is born... this almost allows us to create a story that is so basic (life and death) however gives us the freedom to go absolutely other worldly with it with bright palettes and sacred intentions...

I really like the idea of a futuristic sun-worshipping society. We could be from a galaxy whose sun is close to burning out so we perform rituals to keep it alive? I found a wikipedia page that explains different types of solar deities we can model our religion from. Usually the sun is identified with male characteristics so I think it'd be really interesting to transform it into a feminine entity since we're all women.
Some Ideas:
- In that Wikipedia entry, it has a brief section about a solar barge or a sun chariot which we can use as a prop.
- We can have priestesses dressed more elaborately than the rest of us, who will probably act as assistants or spectators
- We can incorporate Mayan ideas of sacrifice - they believed that to satiate the gods, they had to give a daily blood sacrifice (we can maybe do gold offerings?)
Here are some pictures:

Futuristic ideas

Here are a couple of images that came to mind when I thought of futuristic. I got a lot of my ideas from watching a lot of kpop. There are a few kpop artists who are taking on a futuristic trend in terms of styling; it could be cool to incorporate these styles together in creating a futuristic colony!

2ne1 "Can't Nobody": There are different elements of futuristic style in here, including these wrap-around wire outfits CL (blonde girl) is wearing at around 32 seconds. This song is also quite catchy!

2ne1 "Follow Me"(bottom picture): For a headpiece/face jewelry look. It's probably a more organic interpretation of a what a futuristic look might look like, but it looks pretty awesome.

Narsha "Bbi Ri Bba Bba": Her color palette is somewhat questionable, and yes, she looks really similar to Lady Gaga (but 1. that's a wig, and 2. Lady Gaga apparently took a lot of inspiration from Korean/Japanese pop culture and brought it to the US, so really, Lady Gaga looks like a bunch of kpop stars, lol.) Most important is the beginning, because there are a lot of different images of Narsha that look really futuristic. Also, her outfit is somewhat futuristic.

When I think of futuristic, I tend to think of architecturally-interesting pieces of clothing or accessories. Color palette wise, I prefer monochromatic colors, but I think you could use any color, as look as it has a metallic or latex-like quality to it.

Head Stuff

I like the idea of everyone having a helmet or mask or something. The head related ideas reminded me of hair sculptures which are really cool if you've never seen one.
Here's a picture.
They look super intense (wire and probably hair extensions). But it's an interesting idea if we wanna do something with hair styles too. I know hair accessories in asian culture sometimes have certain symbols of status so maybe we can incorporate that into our hairstyles?

Stargate SG-1

Hi, team. This is the Stargate episode I mentioned about. Even if you're not a fan, it's still interesting to observe how they set up the alien race in this episode. Let me know if you like it or if you don't like it. See you in class :)

-Giang (Sculpture Grad)
Hey there and thanks Stacy for putting this together! I'm loving your images!! I'll add some and brainstorm later just wanted to check in as I think this will be a great way to openly brainstorm and create a dialogue between all of us :)
